My Recent Visit to Notre Dame Elementary School

Bilde
Elementary students from Notre Dame School of De Pere were treated to a visit from author Barbara Techel, right, and her inspirational pet — Frankie, the Walk ‘n Roll Dog — on Jan. 19. / Submitted

Reprinted from the Green Bay Gazette:

Notre Dame School of De Pere
The elementary students were treated to a visit by Frankie, the Walk 'n Roll Dog, on Thursday, Jan. 19. Frankie and her owner, author Barbara Techel, shared their touching story with the students.
When Frankie, a dachshund, suffered a spinal injury, Ms. Techel had her fitted with a custom wheelchair. Frankie persevered and now volunteers as a therapy dog at local hospitals and nursing homes, spreading joy and hope wherever they go.
Their message to the Notre Dame students was threefold: think positive, make a difference and keep on rolling.
Students were able to purchase books about Frankie and have them signed by both Barbara and Frankie — with her paw print. A portion of all book proceeds is donated to various disabled animal charities

Frankie meets therapy donkeys of Luv 'em All Donkey Farm

Recently my mom visited a very special farm with for miniature donkeys. They are all therapy donkeys owned by Susan and Brain Kilton.  They invite special needs groups and the elderly to be with the donkeys. You can read a special story my mom wrote about the donkeys and the day a special needs group visited, "For the Love of Donkeys"

Today I got to meet the donkeys because I will be taking part in visiting some times when special needs groups and elderly come out the the farm.  So not only will they meet donkeys, but they can meet me too!  So here's a fun video of my first time meeting my new donkey friends.

In Memory of Savard, Therapy Dog Extraordinaire of HealthHeelers.com

My mom and I were very saddened to receive an email over the weekend from our friend, Laura, who is the founder and director of an extraordinary therapy dog company in Wisconsin called, Health Heelers.  She started her work with therapy dogs because of her beloved Savard.  He passed away on Monday, July 11th.  Laura sent out this tribute about her amazing, beautiful boy and I asked her if we could share with our readers. She was honored, so I share her tribute below.  Thank you, Savard for your dedication and love to so many... you will be very much missed.
Savard
Monday, July 11th, 2011~ part of my spirit died that day . . .
Undoubtedly one of the most difficult days in my life,  I said so-long to the most incredible creature I have ever had the honor to share life with; Savard, our beloved German Shepherd.
I owe Savard much credit for who I am and what I do; for it is because of Savard that I was able to create my passion in the form of Health Heelers.

Savard loved everybody and everything!

Unfortunately, Savard was a very misunderstood dog when he came into our home as an adopted, untrained juvenile in 1998.  His delight and over exuberance for everything was a challenge! Could he ever become a therapy dog?!?!?! Fortunately, I consulted with some of the best in the dog behavior field including Suzanne Clothier, world-renowned behavior and German Shepherd expert. I learned that Savard’s behavior was out of sheer enthusiasm and zest for all that was good and all that he could make more joyful. Suzanne’s assessment made me realize how much more I needed to learn. My error inspired me to earn over 100 credit hours at seminars and workshops on dog behavior and dog training as I continue my quest for knowledge so that I may be a strong advocate for all of the therapy dogs in my programs.

Savard did become what I and many others consider a 'Master' therapy dog; unbelievably calm and incredibly steady & tolerant, and always with a smile for his ‘patient’. And it was Savard that made me realize the tremendous impact a dog like him, so full of joy and compassion, could make to people outside the walls of the health care facility where I’d started our first animal-assisted therapy program, because in 2005 Savard spent time entertaining children and comforting adults displaced to Wisconsin after they’d experienced the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. Witnessing the “unweighting” that seemed to happen to them as a result of his presence, I began to think of more ways that I could use my education in Animal Assisted Therapy to bring the benefits of therapy animals to far more people than just those in health care institutions. Health Heelers became official that year.

Savard also had a great sense of humor! He knew how to make us laugh and smile. Throughout his life he frequently demonstrated his affinity for making arrangements out of the pet food dishes and toys~ dozens of them; and would even create arrangements when I asked him to!
Bowls savard Red rings Bowls 1
(the arrangements of the red rings, Savard made by selecting those 3 objects from his basket of 28 various toys and other objects including the yellow, green and blue fisher-price rings)
Mostly though, my Joy Boy, Savard taught me how completely, fully and deeply creatures of two different species can care for, learn from, love and support one another to lead lives that provide service and compassion to others.
I know it’s an overused cliché, but Savard was truly my most special, one in a million dog. I will forever be grateful for all that he taught me and all that he gave. He was my heart.

Thank you, Savard! I love you so. ~Laura

Disabled Dachshund Becomes First Ever Cyber Therapy Dog with Companions for the Soul

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Award-winning Author Barbara Techel and her paralyzed therapy dog, Frankie, have been chosen as the first ever cyber therapy dog team. They will appear via Skype to share their inspiring story of learning to see challenges in a positive way and encourage volunteerism despite obstacles we may face.

ELKHART LAKE, WI — Barbara Techel and her 11-year old wheelchair-bound dachshund will share their inspiring and uplifting story about how Frankie suffered a spinal injury, was custom-fitted for a wheelchair, persevered, and became a volunteer therapy dog through Barbara’s award-winning book series, Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog.

They will be appearing via Skype in conjunction with Companions for the Soul(CFTS)who is hosting this first time event on May 31st, 2011.  Barbara and Frankie will be sharing their story with Woodside Elementary School and their K-2 Literacy program. CFTS is a non-profit therapy dog organization based in California and is hosting this first time ever event. CFTS’s programs are targeted at enriching the lives of the handicapped, autistic and special needs children. When executive director, Ginger Mozzetti, discovered Frankie and Barbara through their website, and the work they are doing, she contacted Barbara to ask if Frankie would be their first ever cyber therapy dog and partner with CFTS.

Barbara will share Frankie’s story, a selected reading, and answer questions. And most importantly, Frankie will be there to promote both her books, Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog and Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby’s House to bring the children smiles and joy by being in her presence, as well as encourage the students to read and see their challenges in a positive way.

We all face challenges in life, but when we choose to be positive despite obstacles, we find that our challenges can often time lead to some of our most pivotal learning opportunities.  Frankie taught her owner, Barbara just that, and now Barbara finds great joy in helping others benefit from Frankie’s amazing attitude and valuable life lessons.

Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog book series is a true collection told from Frankie’s viewpoint. The first book tells how Frankie overcame adversity and lives every day to the fullest despite her disability, while the second book in the series, tells how Frankie became a registered therapy dog and gives personal accounts of her visits to the residents of Libby’s House, a senior assisted facility where many residents have Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Frankie the Therapy Dog Visits Memorial Hospital

Getting ready for a visit!

My mom and I love it when it is therapy dog day!  The 1st Friday of the month we visit Memorial Medical Center, the 3rd Monday of the month we visit Libby's House, Senior Assisted Living, and the 2nd Tuesday of the month we visit Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.

Therapy Dog work is sooooo rewarding!  It never fails that when I roll into a room or a facility there are many smiles... and that makes this dog feel awfully special.

If you'd like to be a therapy dog team with your dog there are many great organizations you can get your training from:

We highly recommend getting the training and having your dog as a certified therapy dog, then just popping into places for a visit. Many facilities require that you are a trained team, though there are some that don't. But being certified means you are professional, as well as you are covered under their liability insurance in the event something should happen.

Making Friends as a Therapy Dog

Being a therapy dog I make lots of friends!  Once a month I volunteer at my local hospital.  I also volunteer once or twice a month at a local community hospice.  This is where people who are sick come to stay who have 6 months or less to live.  It is very beautiful at this hospice called Sharon S. Richardson Hospice Community.

Then once a month I visit Libby's House (this is the place my new book is all about!). Most of the residents are older- like grandma's and grandpa's.  One of my favorite residents is Lyla (not her real name).  She just turned 96 years old!

She has a hard time talking, but that's ok, I just listen and pretend I know what she is saying.  Most times I lick and lick her hand to show her I love her.  One day as I was licking her hand she said, "Kisses."  Clear as a bell!  My mom couldn't believe it!  That was the only clear word she has ever said, but we thought it was very special.  Just as special as Lyla is.

The Gift of Second Chances- Occasioanl Paws Feature Story

My mom is a contributing writer for our local paper, the Depot Dispatch.  I know you will find this hard to believe, but she writes about animals... mostly dogs.  Arf!  This is a story about my new friend, Ruby.  Mom and I just love her and think she is the BEST.  Here is her story as it recently appeared in the paper, written by my mom.  Arf-a-roo!

It is my belief that everything that happens, happens for a reason. I may not always like some of the changes that occur, but when I look back, I can usually see the divine purpose that was my guide in helping me learn something new.

So it was with Ted. While at a car show in Beaver Dam with his wife Dianne, Ted was not feeling quite himself. As they were about to leave for the day Ted said, “I just don’t feel well. I need to get out and walk around.” As Ted got out of the car he fell over. Dianne went into shock and everything around her became surreal.

Ted was not breathing and had no pulse. Lucky for him his guardian angels swooped in and saved his life. Near-by participants were able to resuscitate him. Ted was rushed to the hospital and had bypass surgery.

Recovering at home Ted was feeling a void. When they moved to their new home in Glenbeulah a few years ago, their dog Muffy, a Springer and Basset hound mix made the move with them, but passed away a few weeks later. Thinking a dog might be the answer, Ted began his search for a new furry friend to bring into his life.

He went from pound to pound looking for that “special one.” He ended up at the Fond du Lac humane society where he met Ruby. Though she was skin and bones and only weighed 55 pounds, he felt a connection with her.

I asked Ted what made her stand out. “She was not barking and was very calm. She was so docile and her colors were beautiful” he said. Ruby had been there for eleven days.

The volunteers took Ruby outside as Ted watched. The girls were hugging and loving Ruby and she ate it up. Some people may be hesitant to do this because of the stigma placed on certain breeds. Ruby happens to be a Doberman. She is chocolate in color, with lighter shades of chocolate mixed in, and one of the most beautiful Doberman’s I have ever seen. And there is just something about her that draws you right into her soul.

Ted was pretty sure this was the dog for him. He went home and told Dianne. They decided to bring Ruby into their life. When Ted went to pick her up he was handed pedigree papers for her, which surprised him. How did a pedigree dog end up in the pound?

During a baby shower at their home Ted watched as a young child pulled and tugged at Ruby’s ears and neck. She would whimper a bit, but never growled and remained the same sweet, docile dog Ted observed a few weeks earlier.

That is when it occurred to him that Ruby might make a wonderful therapy dog. He had wanted to give back ever since his life was saved. Now that he and Ruby had been given second chances, he felt this was what they were meant to do.

Since Ted had the pedigree papers he was able to contact the breeder of Ruby. Now call it coincidence if you want, but the breeder happened to live in Beaver Dam. As he talked with her he learned her dogs are registered therapy dogs. She also told him that Ruby was the pick of the litter. As a puppy she gave Ruby to a girlfriend for a show dog. A year and a half later that girlfriend gave Ruby away and that was how she ended up at the humane society. A divine purpose was at work as Ruby traveled many roads to her final destination with Ted.

There was no doubt Ruby’s purpose, and soon she passed her Canine Good Citizen award. Ted then went to a therapy dog testing site one day simply to observe what had to be done to have Ruby become registered. He had no intentions of doing the test that day. But as he watched the other dogs he decided on a whim to try with Ruby. He had a hunch she was a natural, and indeed she was. She passed with flying colors.

Ted and Ruby now visit nursing homes two to three times a week. They have made visits to Rocky Knoll, Arbor view, Pine Haven and Prairie Crossing. Many of the residents eagerly await their visit and won’t go to bed until they see Ruby. She also made the day of kids at a daycare in Plymouth, who welcomed meeting the large, gentle giant. Since June, Ruby and Ted have made over fifty visits!

“Ruby knows she is priceless and we call her Diva” Ted said. Final proof of that is the night Ruby would not let Ted sleep. Ruby normally sleeps downstairs, but woke Ted with a constant pawing at the side of the bed. She’d leave after Ted’s scolding, only to return again and again. The last time she returned she put her paw on Ted’s chest intent on getting his full attention. So Ted finally got up, went downstairs and discovered the slow beep of the smoke alarm. As soon as he put in new batteries, Ruby was content to let Ted head back to bed, as she also snuggled in for the remainder of the night. Yes, I would absolutely agree that Ruby is priceless!

Marvelous Marvin Goes to Heaven

My mom and I are sad today to have learned that Marvelous Marvin, a beautiful black lab who did lots of good in the world, has died.

Taken from Marvin's website:

Marvelous Marvin is based on the true story of an 3-year-old black Labrador who was relinquished by his original owner only to be rejected a second time because of a disability.
Despite his disability and rejection, Marvin never gave up hope and overcame his disability and rejection.
Marvelous Marvin has a happy ending, but getting there will certainly evoke your emotions.

To read more about Marvin visit this online story.

Rest in peace, Marvin.  Good dog.

Best Christmas Gift of 2009

Mom and I gave a copy of my newest book, Frankie the Walk 'N Roll Therapy Dog Visits Libby's House to each of my "cousins" on Christmas Eve. My Dad is the only boy in his family with 5 sisters, so the family get togethers can be very loud and fun. But that didn't stop my cousins from sitting in the middle of the living room floor reading my new book. How hot-diggity cool is that??!! It made this dog feel very, very special.

I gave them each an extra copy so they too can make a difference, like one of the theme's of my book talks about. So Mom gave them suggestions on how they could donate the extra book, or to come up with an idea of their own.

So here are pictures of my cousins... they are the BEST and this was the BEST Christmas Gift of 2009!!

Update & More Pics from Frankie's Froedert Hospital Visit

I'm so happy to tell you I received a note from Leisa, whose sweet, nice Dad I visited a few weeks ago at Froedert hospital (he was there after suffering a 2nd stroke within 3-months).
Here is what she had to say:

"The day after Frankie sat in my Dad's lap at Froedert Hospital, and licked his hand on the side that he had no feeling/movement, he began to get some feeling/movement back.

He is mostly able to clean/dress himself, and walks with a one handed walker and minimum assistance. He is getting stronger every day, and his will for recovery is amazing. Your visit meant so much to my Dad and I. Your mom is a wonderful, caring woman, and you, Frankie are a "blessing on wheels"!

Awwww, shucks... just being me and so happy I could bring your Dad a smile! Thanks for sharing with us, Leisa. Please tell your Dad Arf-a-roo and to keep on rolling!!
